Rage We Can Believe In

Rage We Can Believe In

We’ve looked before at the meme making the rounds that there is a tidal wave of rage on the right being fed by Palin and McCain. Depending on who is doing the worrying the meme will claim that they are deliberately inciting the gap toothed redneck mobs* or they are simply unaware that their words are being used by the lunatic fringe to fan the fires of right win hatred.

The first accusation is simply ridiculous and stupid. The second is often well meaning but even if correct, irrelevant. The reason? None of us can spend our lives worrying about the misuse of our ideas by the insanity fringe**.

We could spend pages and pages looking at this meme and how it is part of the payoff the left has been cashing in from all that time invested in the political correctness movement, but I’ll dot hat in a video blog sometime. Let’s be honest, the Obama presidency has been cashing all that in it is the nest egg that will buy him the presidency. It is the atmosphere of doubt, guilt and flexible definitions that are allowing the Obama team to define any criticism of him as driven by racism while the most hateful and vile attacks on his opponents are seen as deserved and acceptable.

Normally that short of doublespeak is just par for the course when you are dealing with folks (usually on the left, the right side fringe has different tactics) who wallow in the victim culture. It’s amusing but not particularly significant. That is, right up until you have large media outlets using this silliness as the most expedient mechanism for manipulating public opinion for the benefit of a candidate they like.

Then it gets interesting indeed. By simply over-reporting some thing and under-reporting others, it is easy to create an impression that simply doesn’t exist. Heck, if you’re really pressed for a juicy bit of hatred on cue you can always just make something up entirely.

“The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.” The Times Leader

Now there have been incidents of folks shouting things at McCain Palin rallies, but they are no more the responsibility of McCain and Palin that Obama is responsible for the morons selling “Palin is a Cunt” t-shirts. If McCain and Palin believe an Obama presidency would be dangerous for this nation they are free to say so. If they want to discuss the reality that Obama associate Will Ayers is a terrorist (and he most definitely is) then they should be free to say so. Yes, there is a line: but simple vehement disagreement doesn’t cross it.

The meme says that simply speaking what you think is now so damaging that you should be stopped even if to any reasonable person your speech is well within your rights. Of course now that we have the stupidity of hate speech legislation on the books the victim culture has handed itself a awesome weapon to silence dissent. If someone says something you find offensive and you have no sense of proportion or ethics you can simply try to have the government shut them up for you. This isn’t surprising though, Obama himself is more than happy to try and use the legal system to keep someone from discussing the facts of his record. On the less legal side this feeling that anything done in the name of the Obamassiah is moral has led to the persecution of “Joe the Plumber” for having the audacity to ask The One a question. Oh, and don’t you dare look into ACORN:

“As Election Day approaches – just as in 2004 and 2006 – Republican Party officials and operatives nationwide, including the candidates themselves, are fomenting specious vote fraud allegations, and there are distorting indications of official involvement or collusion. :
Accordingly, I call on you and Special Prosecutor Dannehy to expand her investigation to include these matters, all of them entirely consistent with the pattern of misconduct already within her charge.” don’t ask or we’ll tell!

Of course, for this meme to be true some casual relationship would need to exist between the Palin / McCain campaign and fringe hatred. No such relationship exists. In fact, once you look below the surface of the current reporting it becomes clear that there is a huge hatred fringe on the left that is doing just fine with the rhetoric of the Obama campaign.

Just for fun, here are more examples: some of them are amusing, others are scary and pathetic. If the parties were reversed they would have been blasted from the rooftops as proof of the meme.

“Armstrong discovered the damage to his 2006 Lexus about 8:30 a.m. at his Sand Key condominium at 1400 Gulf Blvd. Clearwater police and Armstrong said someone etched obscenities and “KKK” into the paint, burned several areas of the car with cigarettes, set the flag on fire on his hood and may have urinated on the vehicle. Officers and Armstrong think the car was singled out because of its political stickers, including one reading “Nobama.” Gateway Pundit

You find it all over, and the comments are equally interesting:

We could go on and on: imagine for instance that this next piece of stupidity was a big white guy slamming poor Obama to the turf in triumph, that would be Racism (note the capitol R). However since Palin is a Republican this is just fine, we shouldn’t worry about it***.

Then there are the really serious ones:

“(Sunday, October 19 – Filed by Mark Williams in Raton, New Mexico with the Stop Obama Tour) We learned at this morning’s Stop Obama Rally here that the McCain/Palin Straight Talk Express came through town yesterday. It arrived with a window shattered by a .22 caliber weapon. It had also been hit by an unknown number of paint balls from a paint ball gun or guns. There were reportedly no injuries and neither candidate was on board.” Mark Williams

Imagine again if this had been Obama’s bus? Imagine the 24 hour CNN tickers, the faux outrage, the demans for “Change!” and “Hope!”. Hell, you can almost see Obama giving a press conference any day now to let us knwot hat he has a gunshot window too :)

So sad it’s amusing really. The only compensation is that if these folks get what they want it will be a Obama Presidency backed by a Dem Congress and Senate. For two years there will be nothing to prevent these fools from implementing their policies of confiscation and wealth redistribution: and when the engine of the economy grinds to a halt the people who actually create wealth and can succeed will find ways to live well and enjoy life, and all those who exist as parasites will still have nothing.

The nudity of the empower will be manifest and I will laugh like hell when it takes the plumbers to save them all :)

* there really are a nontrivial number of folks who really believe in the gap toothed mobs. Read Friendfeed for a while to see them (the worriers, not the mobs: the real gap tooth mob can’t afford to get the power in their mobile home turned back on)

** trust me on this, it happens to me all the time :)

*** this is the subject for a more general post in the future, not tied to the election about how the victim culture takes advantage of the fundamental self reliance of those who do not buy into their worldview as a weapon
